FurSquared has been delighted to partner with Humane Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) of Waukesha County since the convention’s inception. Each year, attendees delight at the opportunity to play with a variety of pets needing homes; raising money in support of HAWS and in some cases even adopting! We are pleased to welcome them back in 2020 and encourage our attendees to support them in any way they are able. Whether it is a few dollars contributed through the wide variety of charity-based paneling and events, sharing their mission with others via word of mouth, or even just some cuddle time with pets in need, every contribution matters.
HAWS is a non-profit organization established in 1965 that assists over 6,000 animals each year and welcomes more than 31,000 human visitors annually. As an “open admissions” shelter, they accept animals regardless of age, health, temperament or breed. They also offer programs and services that promote responsible pet ownership, preventing animal abuse and neglect in the community. HAWS promotes the humane care and treatment of all animals, in support of cooperative humane efforts throughout the state of Wisconsin.
HAWS is a member of the Wisconsin Federated Humane Societies.
First founded and organized In 1965 by concerned residents, HAWS broke ground on their permanent facility in September of 1968 and opened on July 19, 1969. Construction was made possible by the generous donations of time, materials, and money from building suppliers, local residents, founding members, and the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity of Carroll College (now Carroll University). With the shelter’s completion, there was finally a single central location to help reunite lost pets with their owners and to house animals in need of homes.
In the years since, both the physical building and the staff have repeatedly grown in response to increased community need, thanks to the continued support of many organizations like FurSquared. Expansions took place in 1973, 1979, 1991, 2009 and 2012, and the shelter now employs over 40 people! HAWS is able to honor their mission with dedicated spaces for community education, adoption services, and animal medical services.
